In Aroostook county, Maine and around the nation the United States Post Office will be holding their National Letter Carrier's Food Drive. This is a great way to make some child's wish come true of having a full tummy, and some healthy food. It takes so little to fill a bag of non perishables, but will honestly represent so much for those who receive it. With over 38 million Americans going hungry every day, it seems like this would be the least that we could do.

Current numbers show that 9 million children go to bed hungry every night in America. This is surely a sad commentary on the commitment of the richest and most powerful nation on Earth to its children and needy families. Every year over 10,000 Post Offices collects non perishable goods to donate to these families. This year that drive is the week of May 7, 2007. It has to be non-perishable, and not all dented up. This years drive is actually scheduled for Saturday, the 12th of May.

Campbell's soups, America's second Harvest, the United Way, Cox target media, and the AFL-CIO along with the U.S. Post Office are this years sponsors. All you need to do is collect some non-perishable food items, place them in a container or box, and set them next to your mailbox. The Post Office then does the rest.

Many wishes will come about for those who go to bed hungry, just by your simple action of placing a few cans of food outside your door. 39 percent of families that need assistance have at least one adult working in the house. 16 percent of those requiring help are turned away, while 3.9 percent of all U.S. households go hungry everyday. These are staggering, and very sad statistics. Over 96,000,000,000 pounds of food is tossed away every year from the food industry. One in Four people that are in food lines is a loving child in the United States today.

You can donate individual items such as canned meats, fish, soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, and rice. No glass containers please.

Make a true difference this year. Give two items more than you ever have before. Show our close friends, neighbors, and relatives, that we truly do care.
