SPOKANE, Wash- State Governor Bill Wilson had a frog in his throat over a simple mistake Sunday that turned into a media frenzy. During a speech at the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Idaho Luncheon 2009, the Governor confused the state Official Amphibian Bill with pending civil union legislation. Wilson held a press conference this morning at the state house, where he apologized for his blatant error: "I am, frankly, embarrassed. I don't know why I didn't know what amphibian meant. Why I equated it with homosexuals is another one I just don't have the answers for at this time. I deeply regret my words and apologize to all the aquatic species I hurt with my words, especially the Pacific Chorus Frog."
The controversy started on Sunday while addressing the Luncheon. Wearing a purple ribbon tied to his forefinger, he declared: "This is a fine day for all the people of Oregon. Finally, we have a comprehensive bill that addresses the rights of amphibians to marry."
Minutes later, the Governor made another slip-up. "I know all of you amphibians deserve the right to marry, and I won't stand in the way of that. So, today I am declaring that I will be signing the Official Amphibian Bill when it comes across my desk. You made a law this week."
CNN was covering the speech as part of their new upcoming "Governor of Reality" television reality series. Videos from the speech were found on YouTube, Google Video, and MySpace within hours.
Wilson held a meeting today with Kermit the Frog, the Geico Gecko, and other un-named celebrities. He was not speeding and he was wearing his seat belt.
