San Angelo is known for its many Mexican food restaurants, and perhaps the largest and most famous is Henry's Diner. It has been a San Angelo staple when it comes to eating out for decades, and has undergone a few expansions over the years.

Unfortunately, it is also known for its very bland and mediocre food. In a city with a Mexican food joint seemingly on every street corner, it sometimes amazes me that the place remains so popular. The food isn't bad, but it's very bland.

One plus in its favor is that it is always open pretty late. So if it's 11 p.m. and you are hungry, it is one of the few Mexican food options in town.

Atmosphere

The restaurant is attractive from the outside, and is a large white stucco building. The inside has a lobby with a nice fountain, and the atmosphere and ambience is quite nice. It is a very large restaurant with a few large rooms.

Menu

My last trip to Henry's Diner just happened to fall on the day that the Carnitas were on special. Anyone in San Angelo knows what Carnitas are, but they are basically steak bits that come with tortillas. You basically make a fajita out of them. This is one of the dishes at Henry's that I really like. They usually run $8.95 which is reasonable, and they come with beans and fries. I got it for $2 less on special.

My dinner companion got a Mexican dinner, which comes with a cheese enchilada, tamale, taco, refried beans, and rice. Their enchiladas aren't that great, and my friend agreed.

"The food isn't bad, but it's bland, and even the hot sauce isn't spicy," she said.

And speaking of chips and hot sauce, while the salsa isn't very good, they do have what is called white sauce, and that is very good. I'm not sure what is in it, but it is good stuff.

Overall the prices at Henry's are reasonable, and you can get an entrée usually from $7 to $9.

Service

The service at Henry's has always been pretty good, nothing to complain about. The food is served fairly quickly, so that is a bonus.

Conclusion

Yeah I know most are locals, of course. Yep not everyone has the same tastes. I just have never come across anyone in San Angelo who considered it their FAVORITE by any means. I know there are people who do though. Happy eats!

First let me say that I am a native to the area, I am sorry if I forgot to let you know that. I was born in San Angelo and grew up in the Concho Valley. I realize that I have been in Louisiana for 12 years, but have generations of family in San Angelo and the surrounding counties. I also know that most of the people who eat at Henry's are not tourists, they are locals. Many times I have had the opportunity to run into people that I know in this establishment. I also have a few other favorite Mexican Food restaurants in San Angelo, but Henry's is my absolute favorite. Sorry if you do not agree.

I appreciate your input. And you are right, everyone's tastes are different. I don't think most native San Angeloans would agree about Henry's being a good example of San Angelo Mexican food. Many times in cities the really big and popular places aren't as well liked by the locals, who know more about the smaller places that are many times better and a better kept secret. For example, the Mexican restaurants on the San Antonio Riverwalk are always packed, but ask anyone in San Antonio and they will tell you the food is terrible compared to the food you will get off the Riverwalk. But most tourists probably love it and don't know any better.

Everyone has their own opinion of what Mexican Food should taste like. Just one pass by Henry's Diner in San Angelo during lunch or dinner time will prove how well Henry's Diner is liked in this west Texas town. I personally travel from Louisiana only a few times a year and Henry's Diner is always on my short list of places to eat. I have eaten at most of the other Mexican Food restaurants in San Angelo and would whole heartedly disagree with your assessment of this restaurant.
