Restaurant Review: Gil's in San Angelo, Texas

Gil's is yet another Mexican food restaurant in San Angelo. It is located on Knickerbocker near Bryant Boulevard in the building that used to be Emery's. Emery's was always a favorite of mine, and had a great combination of Mexican and American food.

Gil's is good as well, although it focuses more on Mexican food. The food is good, but not great, and could have easily gotten lost in the San Angelo Mexican food shuffle for me if not for one thing. What is that one thing you ask? Well, they offer an amazing special every week between Tuesday and Thursday. They offer many of their main dishes for half price.

This is an outstanding deal because their menu items are already fairly low priced. We go just about every week, and you can get two entrees, an appetizer, and drinks for barely over $10! That is fantastic.

The only downside to the food at Gil's is that the salsa is pretty bland. I like my salsa to be spicy, otherwise it just tastes like you are eating tomato sauce, ugh. They do have good food overall, however, and a large menu.

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere with low lighting and southwestern décor. The service has always been friendly as well, and the food is served up very quickly, something pretty common among Mexican restaurants.

My last trip to Gil's I ordered the Chile Relleno. It only cost $2.99 and came with beans and rice. We always order bean and cheese nachos covered in jalapenos as an appetizer when we go Tuesday through Thursday. They only cost $2.

My friend ordered the sour cream chicken enchiladas. It came with beans and rice and only cost $2.99 as well. This is a dish she hasn't ordered at Gil's before, but was pleasantly surprised.

"The sour cream enchiladas were very good," she said. "I also love their bean and cheese nachos."

Gil's also offers some good American food if you aren't in the mood for Tex-Mex. They have very good chicken bits and chicken fried steak.
