Each year in the United States since 1914, the second Sunday in the month of May has been designated as Mother's Day. Mother's Day is the day that we honor our mothers by spending time with them, perhaps even pampering them with special gifts. For Mother's Day, many people will give the traditional gifts such as flowers and candy. If you want to give your mother something different for Mother's Day this year, here are some helpful hints.

When deciding what to give my Mom for Mother's Day, I always get into the mindset of buying something for her that she would not ordinarily buy for herself. My mom loves to wear jewelry, but does not buy much of it for herself. I remember one Mother's Day; all of us kids went in and bought Mom a Mother's ring with all our birthstones on it. She still has the ring, and wears it often.

You might want to give your Mom a gift to which you have given a lot of thought. No other gift says "thought" quite like a gift such as a scrapbook of treasured old family pictures. Perhaps you may want to make your mom a DVD of those treasured photos or home movies.

If your Mom has a particular hobby or item that she loves to collect, you may want to consider a gift that she can use when she is doing that hobby. My mom does not have a particular hobby, so I never have much to choose from here.

If your mom has a certain item that she loves to collect, you could find her a rare piece that she probably does not already have. My mom loves to collect Native American posters and posters, figurines, and other items with roosters on them. There are always many unique styles and prints available for almost anything that your Mom might be interested in collecting.

Perhaps you may want to treat your mom with a special dinner of her favorite dishes. This is a great gift for mom, and a great way to get the entire family together to honor mom. I remember one Mother's Day; my mom requested that we all not get her anything extravagant. She wanted, more than anything that year, a family dinner consisting of hamburgers cooked on the grill. My family loves getting together to eat, therefore, that was the perfect choice for Mother's Day.

Takeaways
  • Mother's Day gifts should be something that reflects your Mother's interests, hobbies or activities
