There are a lot of cashiers out there. In 2004 there were three and a half million jobs that were held by cashiers. When you are a cashier there are some things that you can expect.

Many People Will Come and Go

There is a huge turnover in the position of cashiers, so don't be surprised if you become a cashier that you will see someone hired and quit or fired a lot.

You are Expected to Smile Under All Circumstances

Your employer will expect that you are giving a kind smile to every single customer that you come in contact with, no matter if it is Christmas Eve the hour before the store is closing and your single goal is to get people rung up and out of the store.

You are Expected to Greet People as They Walk In

Even though a lot of people are glad that a cashier greets them as they walk into the store, there are a lot of people who are talking to someone as they are walking in or don't want to be talking to anyone and they will not be quite as kind with their greeting to the cashier.

You Will Ask The Question Debit or Credit a Lot

Whenever a customer is paying with a debit or credit card you will have to ask them if the card is a debit card or a credit card. Once you have the total of the what they have to pay and the customer swipes their card you will say "debit or credit" if they respond debit you'll reply "would you like any cash back" if they say credit you will have ask for their ID. This may vary depending on where you work as a cashier.

People Will Be Aggravated About Having to Show Their ID

I am going to start my job at walgreens. I have never been a cashier nor as a service clerk before. I have been working as a warehouse worker at distribution and food service centers for 7 years and I loaded and unloaded merchandise for a living. However I was laid off recently and I had to get employment in retail. Can someone help me with advice? Thank you.

A lot of this is very true :)

Great article. Before becoming a work-at-home mom, I worked in retail. I loved my job as a cashier, as I loved the customer interaction. I later worked my way up to the assistant manager and then left to be a manager of another retail store when I was 19. So, to all the cashiers out there, take this points mentioned from this well written article, implement them, and you may move up the chain!

I remember what it was like--though it was long ago. I don't miss working a cash register at all. Good article

I totally forgot about the people who talk on their cell phones. LOL

This is spot-on. It's funny how people will get so grouchy about having to show an ID, when it's for their own protection. I liked being a cashier, except when I'd get idiots standing at my register talking on their cell phone and ignoring me, holding up my line. They most certainly did NOT get service with a smile from me. :-P

Great overview of this job! I got in the habit of counting change back when I was a cashier. Now I always do it when I get change back myself - lol!
