If you're a "shock jock", you eventually wind up looking at a big problem: "How do I top my last outrageous stunt?" At that moment of epiphany, you either come up dry, figuring that your audience is probably numb and jaded by your relentless shtick; or you come up with a topper that's one notch below or above snuff pornography; or else you say, "Screw it!" and you go all way beyond any semblance of human decency, believing in the old chestnut that "there's no such thing as bad publicity."

Without mentioning the most obvious offenders like Imus and Howard (without the "K") Stern, here are some outrageous examples of shock jock stunts:

1) Some of the more over-the-top stunts have stemmed from rival deejay feuds, real or bogus. In 2006, New York Power 105's DJ Star threatened to abuse a rival deejay's 4-year-old daughter. "Where does the kid go to school?" he said. "I got $500 for that information. Somebody email me or give me a call. Just tell me where the kid goes to school."

Several New York City council members demanded that Clear Channel, Power 105's parent company, fire the deejay. And they did.

2) In 2005, another New York station, WQHT ("Hot 97"), conducted a promotion called "Smackfest" where women "competed" for cash and prizes by slapping each other, causing then New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer fined the station $240,000, part of which would go to a "domestic violence awareness charity."

In the meantime, in that same year at that same station, they aired a "parody" song containing racist lyrics about the Asian tsunami, one month after the tragic event that killed 187,000 people. Lyrics included the following: "Go find your mommy. I just saw her float by. A tree went through her head. And now your children will be sold. Child slavery."

The old saying goes "comedy is tragedy plus time." Yeah, right.

3) In 2001, Tampa, Florida deejay Bubba the Love Sponge aired the slaughter of a wild pig by two hunters in his station's parking lot. Bubba countered charges of animal cruelty, stating that the pig was slaughtered in the legal and humane way as described in Florida state statute. He was acquitted of all charges.

These "radio personalities" try to play to the lower echelons of society and then play dumb when they go too far. Some things are always offensive and you should just know better. Great article.

To Carol: because there are a lot of sick people out there that think they are funny.

What horrible stunts. Why does anyone listen to these people? As consumers we should band together and get them off the air.
