The Obama Factor: From November 4, 2008 to January 20, 2009

In the wake of President Barack Obama's historic victory, a host of animosity by various circles was poised to greet him and his elated supporters. By 11 pm, after the final results were in, everywhere from cyberspace to the local Wal-Mart was filled with joyous Obama supporters and downright solemn or belligerent McCain supporters.

Personally, I spent the majority of my time on November 5, receiving numerous phone calls and emails about ignorant and hateful behavior that was taking place all over the state of Alabama.

Let me put it this way - my parents rushed to pick up my teenage brother from my old high school in good old Selma, Alabama (which by the way is one of the bedrocks of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama where the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the march to Montgomery ) after the majority of the African American students at the school were placed into in school suspension for openly expressing their support and happiness of Senator Obama's historic victory of becoming the first African American elected President of the United States.

My brother who is a freshman in high school quickly called my parents to express that the largely Caucasian teachers were behaving in undignified ways and openingly admonishing students for discussing their support of Barack Obama. The teachers reportedly punished the students for their expressions by sending them to in school suspension which is basically detention during the school day. In addition, other students expressed that there was an extreme air of racial tension in the school and by the end of the school day things shaped up to be extremely chaotic.
