Roanoke is a small city in southwestern Virgnia. The Roanoke Valley is made up of four primary towns...Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem and Vinton. Roanoke City is the largest area served in terms of population with about 92,000 people living within the city limits. The combined figure for the entire valley is at about 230,000. The Roanoke Valley area is the fourth largest in Virginia. The city has an area of approximately 43 miles. The county, Salem and Vinton have significantly higher income earning residents, while the city has far more of a working class population. The bus system covers the city far more extensively than it does any other area, having only minimal routes into the county, Salem and Vinton.

The mass transit system has about twelve routes. It also has a commuter bus to the New River Valley, for those students who attend Virginia Tech and those folk who work in that area. There are specialized transportation services for the disabled, and shuttle bus routes for special events. There is normally one bus an hour with peak service on the half hour in the early morning and late afternoon. The buses run from 6AM to 8PM Monday through Saturday. There is no service on Sunday, or on certain holidays throughout the year. The central bus station is located at Campbell Court in downtown Roanoke City. You can catch or transfer a bus to any route from this location. Transfers are free provided you ask the driver for one when you board the bus and pay your fare. A transfer is good for only one ride.
