Yankees-Angels Game 5 Has Angels Narrowly Staying Alive

The Yankees-Angels ALCS Game 5 was expected to be a coronation. Instead, the Yankees-Angels Game 5 delayed the Yankees' World Series trip -- barely. The Yankees-Angels Game 5 looked to be over by the seventh inning, when the Angels were up 4-0. Instead, that's when the Yankees-Angels Game 5 really started, as questionable moves and two-out rallies looked to place the Yankees on the brink of an ALCS title. Instead, the Yankees-Angels Game 5 turned back to the Angels, who then survived another Yankees rally to send the ALCS back to New York.

The Yankees-Angels ALCS Game 5 2009 finally ended with a 7-6 Angels win. But the Angels had to survive a six-run Yankees seventh inning to do it, and a bases loaded, two out ninth inning on top of it. The Angels are only still alive after Game 5 because ice-cold Nick Swisher popped out on a 3-2 count to end it, and because Mike Scioscia's moves only nearly cost the Angels' their season.

Scioscia may have left ace John Lackey in too long in the seventh, as he allowed the Yankees to load the bases. But after getting to two outs, Scioscia may have then taken Lackey out too soon, as the Yankees got six runs after Lackey left. The Yankees-Angels Game 5 would have normally ended right there, except the Angels got three two-out runs off the Yankees bullpen.

The Yankees-Angels Game 5 was then one out away from ending peacefully. But the decision to intentionally walk Alex Rodriguez with two outs and no one on almost destroyed the Angels, as closer Brian Fuentes went from breezing along to loading the bases. Things looked set for a typical Yankees rally, until Swisher popped up on a full count.

With that, the Yankees-Angels Game 5 sent the 2009 ALCS to New York, against all odds. The Angels technically got what they wanted, but most believe they only won Game 3 because of Joe Girardi's errors, and Game 5 was nearly given away twice. The Yankees-Angels series is still expected to be won by the Yankees in New York this weekend.
