Those who are against school uniforms are generally against them because they feel it prevents "self expression" and "freedom of wardrobe." Those who support them argue that school is not meant as a place to flaunt your fashion sense but a place to learn. Schools should be a place where students go to learn and for this reason, school uniforms make sense. There is a common mentality in support of school uniforms that "young women who wear revealing clothing may distract young men from their studies." Well, this may be the case but young women can wear paper bags to school and still distract young men from their studies! Young men are not driven by cleavage and booty shorts, they are driven by hormones. The same can be said of young women who see guys wearing tight shirts and low riding jeans. School uniforms don't encourage or discourage teens from being attracted or distracted. They merely set the precedent for learning and prepare for the years ahead.

I definitely agree with not wearing a uniform because ...like honestly what's the point. I mean they say that it's for safety reasons...but that's bullshit because anyone can intrude into school property of they really wanted to. I know cause I go to a uniform school and there are like 2000 people in my school and I give my uniform to my friends form other schools and they come in all time. I think the beast way to enforce safety into the school is by having Id cards!

We had no choice but to wear school uniforms in school (school logo on our sweatshirt, white blouse or shirt, black or grey skirt or trousers). I have seen it from both angles though. Half of my school life was spent wearing school uniforms, the other was wearing my own clothes. In the UK, schoolchildren are dressed the same when they wear a school uniform from a young age. It's only after the age of 16 that you "earn" your right to wear your own clothes if you choose to stay on in school. I think it really helps. Sophie

I so agree.

After wearing uniforms for four years, I whole heartedly disagree with the notion of enforced uniforms. Let the kid wear what he wants - the administrators have far more important things to be doing than making sure the kid is wearing a belt.

Good article Leena.I absolutely agree. This is not at all about "personal choice". It is about preparing people for the future. However, I think this is probably an individual school board issue and most would be unwilling to upset their constituents. I wonder if this is only a "superficial" fix. People will always find way to compete, be it shoes, cars, etc. What is needed is much longer school year and better pay for teachers.
