The Great Books Summer Program. In operation for only 5 years the Great Books Summer Program is already a much sought after camping opportunity in Massachusetts. ( a second program is also held in California ) . For each of the last five years bright and striving young people who are middle school or high school students have come for a one or two week program held at Amherst College in western Massachusetts.

The program that is offered here is a wonderful mix of possibilities. All attendees take part in instructional conversations about the works of many great writers like Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson, Dante , and William Carlos Williams. During the day, time is given over to the special electives young people may choose including creative writing. They can work in a variety of disciplines like screenwriting , skit preparation or poetry. There is plenty of time for one on one critiquing and assistance. Program directors also make certain to include time for students to enjoy the on campus pool and other on campus recreational facilities.
