Acyclovir is a drug that is classified as an antiviral drug. Acyclovir works against many of the herpes viruses. This medication is not an actual cure for herpes, but it does help your symptoms. The various herpes types that Acyclovir will treat are genital herpes, herpes simplex that is
a cold sore on the lips, the chicken pox and shingles virus known as Herpes Zoster.
Like any medication, Acyclovir does have potential side effects with it. Side effects that are more serious are, not urinating anymore, lower back pain, bruising easily and also bleeding, and feeling terribly lethargic. If these side effects appear while taking Acyclovir, see your doctor quickly.
Other less serious effects are, upset stomach and vomiting, headaches and stomach pains, and noticeable hands and feet swelling. All side effects whether they are serious or not need reporting to your doctor.
This drug may make a person feel very sleepy. Therefore, it is advisable to not drive or operate other machinery while taking it. It is also important to limit intake of alcohol since the side effect of lethargy may be compounded.
If you are also taking other drugs, please tell your doctor about what they are. Other drugs known as Benemid, Depakote, or Dilantin, may interact with Acyclovir in a negative way. This is why it is important that your prescribing doctor has all information they need about your medical history.
Take the full course of treatment when taking Acyclovir, and exactly as your prescribed it. Do not alter the doses taking more or less. This drug seems to work best when the symptoms are just starting out rather than when they have become advanced.
When you have any kind of a herpes viral infection, you need to stay as germ free as possible. Herpes can be spread and is highly contagious. It is also important not to touch your blisters and then rub your eye. Doing that can possibly cause eye damage.
Acyclovir is probably not the best choice of antiviral drug to give to any person with kidney disease or any type of renal impairment.
