Why You Should Avoid Artificial Sweeteners

Stick to Natural Sweeteners and Real Sugars

Artificial sweeteners are sugar substitutes, which are often much sweeter than regular sugar. They are closely regulated by the FDA. While glucose (aka dextrose) is not healthy in large quantities, artificial sweeteners are far more dangerous. The good thing about artificial sweeteners is
that they have few calories and can be eaten by Diabetics without affecting blood sugar. Unfortunately, they are all linked to cancer and various other medical problems. The body treats them, and many other chemicals, like toxins.

Saccharin, aka Sweet-n-Low, was the first artificial sweetener created. It was once widely popular. It has caused tumors in rats, but human studies have shown that it is not a carcinogen for us. Some people are sensitive to saccharin, mainly those who are allergic to sulfonamides. Those with "sulfa allergy," especially children, should avoid it. Adverse reactions are pruritis (itching) and urticaria (rash), as well as eczema and photosensitivity (sensitivity to light). Less common side effects include wheezing, nausea, diarrhea, tongue blisters, and headache. Sensory neuropathy, fixed eruptions, and tachycardia can also occur. Saccharin-adulterated formula has caused irritability, hypertonia, insomnia, opisthotonos, and strabismus for as much as 36 hours in infants. The AMA recommends young children and pregnant woman limit their intake.

That aspartame claim (and probably everything else in this article) is BS. That claim was started by a "chain letter" e-mail that was circulated heavily in the late 90's. But all of those claims were NEVER proven, and it irresponsible that you would post that it causes almost every disease known as a fact, "Heather B." For people that want facts about aspartame, go here: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp Leave it to the people that have done there homework. Thank you.

This just kills me. no pun intended. I ve just been dx with breast cancer mets. and i have made a change in my families eating not that i had to change much. i thought. i have really started to research and read labels. wow its amazing that the fda approves so many chemicals in our daily lives that are essentially killing us. but when it comes time to approve drugs to hopefully put us into some kind of remission or maybe even a cure it seem to take them for ever. wheres the logic in that.????? MONEY

Yeah I have heard of Stevia but know very little about it. I use honey, agave nectar, and beet sugar.:)

This was a really great and informative article. I was, and unfortunately still am a little, addicted to diet pepsi. I think I read somewhere that aspartame can have that "addictive" affect, but don't quote me on that. I cut out sugars (expcept my DP which i'm trying to get off of too)about 2 months ago when my husband's doctor suggested he begin something like the SB diet. The SB diet actually says to use artificial sweeteners so I went to Whole foods to look for something called Stevia. I don't know much about it except it's supposed to be a natural sweetener from a plant in Africa?? Anyway, I use it in coffee and that's all the "sweetener" I need for the day.

Oh my I'd never heard of that. Artificial sweeteners are certainly the most scary of all the food additives. :(

A friend of mine in the food industry once got me a copy of the developmental report for aspertame. It seems that in many instances, laboratory rats that were fed the same amount of aspertame as they were saccharin became cannibalistic and self-maiming, eating their own legs off. And they say it's safe for us. No wonder no one trusts our government.
