Salvation - If Achieved, Can it Be Lost?

Once Saved Always Saved?

"Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Personal Savior?" When I lived in New Jersey, this is a question I often heard when I visited people in the door-to-door ministry. What I found particularly interesting is the almost word-for-word way this question was repeated by different
 individuals. Once in the town of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, I met a female member of the clergy who said, "I am saved". I politely asked her what she was saved from. She replied, "That's a good question." She wasn't really sure.

In the Bible, the concept of being saved applies to a number of different things. Inasmuch as nearly all uses of that expression tie in with everlasting life, however, they may be lumped together loosely. Such salvation is inextricably tied in with the promised messiah or savior, Jesus Christ. For that reason, what the Christian apostle Peter said under inspiration to some leaders of the Jewish people, formerly God's Chosen People should be of interest to us all.

Peter's Proclamation to the Jewish Religious Leaders

Filled with holy spirit, Peter advised Annas the Chief Priest, Caiaphas, and others using these words found at Acts 4:8-12,

"Rulers of the people and older men, if we are this day being examined, on the basis of a good deed to an ailing man, as to by whom this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you impaled but whom God raised up from the dead, by this one does this man stand here sound in front of you. This is 'the stone that was treated by you builders as of no account that has become the head of the corner.' Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved." ("New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures") (Italics mine)

I agree with the below.. I just watched a movie where a man was saved but then gave money to the church during his life of crime..

Hi Vincent, I'm going to use this article as a link in one of my articles when I write on OSAS. I live in the suburbs of Phila and OSAO is extremely prevalent. My husband and I don't meet many Christians who don't believe in OSAS. I used to believe OSAS because that's what was subtley taught in the church I went to - I didn't even realize I was believing i until the Holy Spirit revealed it and hit me like a ton of bricks! Thanks for the encouragement. It's so refreshing to hear the truth. ~ Lisa

Completely agree with Rebecca and you. Great job on this with lots of good verses for clarification.

@Rebecca - Exactly!

To me, once saved but still a sinner attempting to live according to God's will and asking for forgiveness remains saved. But a saved person can decide to follow evil and turn their back on God, thus no longer saved...

Very powerful read, nicely done!

I have known lots of people who have backslid. So i think the once saved always saved is not true either.

I guess with what Bridget wrote, it is more a general statement made in Church to declare the general state of man and imperfection and recognize what must be "worked on" to become a better person. On top of that, the individual must address their own issues and making them right.

@Bridget - This is good to know, Bridget. One should have a spirit of knowing they are imperfect sinners. There is a catch here, though. This sounds like a memorized speech or a public statement using the same words. True repentance is from the heart and is an individual expression based on one's own actions and words. Salvation is too important to allow simply a public expression to wipe the slate. Also, confession needs to be made to affected parties in some instances. If one commits adultery against one's mate, that one needs to confess the sin to the mate before God is willing to forgive that one. This is not done by a memorized declaration.

@Christine - Not at all. Often times it gives me opportunity to respond that broadens the understanding of the article and it shows I am prepared to answer questions. Here's the answer: No truly repentant Christian loses his or her salvation. It is the practice of sin or the commission of serious sin without heartfelt repentance seriously endangers ones salvation. We'll let the scriptures I brought out in the article show exactly what displeases God.
