Should Omar Minaya Be the New York Mets General Manager in 2009?
The New York Mets had one of the most disappointing seasons of recent memory. There were fights among players and coaches, more than 90 losses and the injury list was more packed than the stadium. But can Omar Minaya be blamed? Does Omar Minaya deserve any fault for this season or can we chalk it up to injuries? Does Omar Minaya deserve another chance or should he be fired?
There have been some good acquisitions made by Omar Minaya. Omar Minaya acquired both John Maine and Oliver Perez for pretty much nothing. Minaya has brought stars to the team like Johan Santana, Francisco Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran. Omar has made sure to lock up the young stars, Jose Reyes and David Wright, for several years at a good price. (Who wouldn't take David Wright for $7.5 million last year).
Omar Minaya has made some bad moves during the offseason as well. Oliver Perez was a great steal when they traded for him but Minaya overpaid to keep him. Luis Castillo was paid a lot of money that he didn't deserve, although he did quietly have a bounce back season in 2009. Mets fans should not be that angry though. Show me a big market team that has never overpaid for players and I'll show you a cure for cancer.
Omar Minaya has done fine during the offseason. Whether the New York Mets should keep Minaya on the club is based solely on his decisions during the season, which is not really much of anything. A general manager's job is not to build the team in the offseason and just sit around while they play 162 games. Players get injured, players have disappointing seasons or sometimes seasons just need one more acquisition to put them over the hump. Omar Minaya has rarely made any kind of impact during the season.
