Dear New York Yankees: A Letter from a Mets Fan
All Mets Fans Must Unite Behind the Yankees in 2009
Dear 2009 New York Yankees,After Sunday night's victory over the Angels, we now know that you will be taking on our hated rival, the Philadelphia Phillies, in the 2009 World Series. Being the Yankees and playing in the World Series, you obviously have quite a bit on your minds at the moment so I'll make this short.
We, the community of New York Mets fans, need you to defeat the Phillies and win the 2009 World Series.
I can't deny that New York Mets and Yankees fans haven't always been cordial toward one another. Younger Mets fans are still angry at the Yankees over that whole 2000 Subway Series thing. Older Mets fans may resent the Yankees because of the old Brooklyn Dodgers-Yankees rivalry. What you must understand, Yankees, is that Mets fans are truly just jealous.
That's right. I'm man enough to admit it.
You, the New York Yankees, have won 26 world championships. Our beloved New York Mets have only won two. That, of course, is the only the beginning of our heartache. Perhaps you guys remember the 2006 postseason when the Mets lost game seven of the NLCS in New York against a very, very less talented St. Louis ball club. Then, of course, there's the mighty and historic collapse of the 2007 New York Mets.
Perhaps the ultimate humiliation came during the 2008 Major League Baseball season. The Philadelphia Phillies won the division and eventually went on to win the World Series. We, both proud New Yorkers and Mets fans, had to watch the city that is most famous for owning a bell celebrate a World Series championship. The pain from this moment had only yet begun to subside when the Phillies won another pennant this season.
This time could be worse, though. The Phillies now have one of our own, Pedro Martinez, a man who has vowed to once again keep New York and the Yankees from winning a World Series. He did a great job of preventing New York from winning a World Series while playing for both the Red Sox and the Mets. Now, he'll be doing it for the hated Philadelphia Phillies.
