Health and fitness writers know that it is one of the largest markets other than mainstream fiction. Competition is brutal and the fight for the slots at the publishing houses can get messy. You need a competent agent going to work for you, one who knows the market trends and which houses are seeking what type of manuscripts. They can more easily find a home for your book than you can, they can also get your foot in the door of the publishing houses that don't even look at unsolicited manuscripts.
This market sees authors such as Dr. Phil and books like the gazillion selling Atkins Diet in the ranks. Without a marketing plan and a power house book publisher (the kind that you can only get with an agent), your book may be lost among the masses. Health and fitness writers either need to be health care professionals, fitness trainers, or co-authored by a well named source in either of these fields. Average writers, no matter what their skill level, will not have much credibility in the big markets.
The health and fitness market today is wide open for business. A Google search on "health" turns up 1,050,000,000 results, while the same on "fitness" turns up 490,000,000. Everyone is looking up a new prescription, ailment, the latest health fad or craze, the new diet, or for a vitamin supplement. Today's market for health and fitness writers couldn't be more fruitful for competent writers. All one needs is an idea, a great book proposal, and an agent willing to go to work getting you in touch with the right publisher and seeing that book come to fruition a year or two down the road. Do you have a health or fitness idea that would make a great book? All you need is the idea, the proposal nicely polished and ready to go, and a few clicks to an email or licks of a stamp.
