Sometimes the American legal system is a joke. This is one of those times.District of Columbia Administrative Hearings Judge, Roy Pearson, is filing a lawsuit against South Korean dry-cleaner owners Jin Nam Chung, Soo Chung, and Ki Chung. The judge is representing himself and he wants an astounding $65 million for a pair of pants that were at one time missing.
Roy Pearson had disagreements with the Chungs in the past but kept returning to the dry cleaner. A pair of pants from one of his suits went missing. Roy went nuts and demanded a thousand dollars: the price of the suit. The Chungs found the pants a week later and tried to return the pants to Mr. Pearson. The Chungs refused to pay him a thousand dollars because the pants were recovered. This is when Mr. Pearson lost it. The Chungs tried to settle the dispute with offers of $3,000, $4,600, and $12,000. Pierson, being the crazed lunatic that he apparently is, wanted more money out of these immigrants who were trying to make it on their own in America. He came up with some crazy costs. This includes a $15,000 cost for having to get a rental car every weekend for the next 10 years in order to find another dry cleaner. The majority of this $65 million dollar lawsuit comes from Roy's interpretation of a District of Columbia consumer protection law that charges violators $1,500 a day for each violation. He calculated all of this for three defendants and this came up with his grand total.
The Chungs had moved here from South Korea seven years ago so they could have a better life. Mr. Pearson wants to screw this all up. The Chungs lawyer said, "They're out a lot of money, but more importantly, incredibly disenchanted with the system. This has destroyed their lives."
There has been a lot of support for the Chungs in the face of this controversy. It seems like most people agree that Roy Pearson is a huge asshole who is abusing our legal system. The Chungs lawyer added, "There has been a significant groundswell of support for the Chungs."
