Sen. Barack Obama has been placed under the protection of the United States Secret Service. Dept of Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff signed off this move after consulting a Congressional Committee.

This marks the first time that a candidate has received the protection of the Secret Service this early in the campaign. Generally it is not given until the candidate is in fact the official nominee of a party.

Obama's camp requested the extra security due to a threat made against the Senator. They have not requested that all questions go directly to Homeland Security or the Secret Service. Federal law allows candidates to seek protection if they meet a series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.

Hillary Clinton already had the protection of the Secret Service due to being a former first lady.
Jessie Jackson had to receive protection early in his campaign in the 80s due to death threats.

It would appear that having a viable African American and a woman candidate has some disturbed looking for opportunities to harm the people that America is clearly choosing.

Obama tries to play down the role of race. However, he did write in "The Audacity of Hope": "Whatever preconceived notions white Americans may continue to hold, the overwhelming majority of them these days are able -- if given the time -- to look beyond race in making their judgments of people."

Jessie Jackson told Obama that he had to consider his family when running, because they would become targets too.

There are threats and talk on the Internet about the possible assassination of Obama if he was to win the presidency.

Takeaways
  • Sen. Obama is a viable candidate
  • Sen Obama has met or surpassed Hillary Clinton in fundraising
  • Many think Obama will be killed if elected

I have been the victim of subtle threats from a sick, sad man from New York. If something happens to me or my family (i.e. our house is burned down tonight or another night, he tries to kill me in my sleep, he tries to kill me personally, etc.), know that this man is responsible. If you look into my past and look at the graduate school that I just left, then you'll know who I'm talking about. He pretends to like me but it's all FAKE. He doesn't really care about me but now, he's being protected by the Department of Homeland Security, who are spying on me. Surveillance against Americans is the fast-growing form of domestic servitude. But here's the truth from me (in case this sick bastard does kill me or sends someone else. He'll never come at you directly, he'll send someone else to do his dirty work for him. That someone else could be black, white, an animal, car accident, house burning down, etc.): 1. I'm not a terrorist but an activist. 2. I'm not crazy.

I would say yes. From the lynching of black males for even looking at a white women to the over sexualization of black males in porn right now, this nation has always been deeply afraid that young black strong men are naturally predisposed to kill and rape. I can not tell you how many young white intelgent liberal friends of mine have expressed fear of walking through my home neighborhood for fear of getting gangraped instantly. Change clothes and change accents and suddenly I go from being a ivy legage student to an inhuman animal in seconds. Think what you want about race relations in this country, but I can tell you, it is dificult being a human being trapped in the body of thug.

Looking at some comments posted just on AC article's I wonder if you over-estimate "white" Americans, but hopefully those people are in the minority. I wonder if those callers would be ready for a "black" woman President, because I know who I would vote for~based on her voting record~if she were running.
