While not a 'girly-girl', I do have a few vices when it comes to beauty. My two biggest vanities are my hair, which is long enough I sit on it, full, thick, and properly wavy - not to mention a nice auburn red. The second vanity I currently have is my fingernails. They are long, manicured, and very pretty.

I don't say this actually to be vain, because the truth is, I work very hard at keeping them healthy and presentable. I do tend to go through spells where I don't do much to my nails, and a few years back, I used to go every week for a manicure and polish change, but here recently, I've just been too busy and preoccupied to do that.

So I decided to take matters into my own hands, so to speak, and see what I could learn about caring for my own nails, without expensive manicures and treatements.

This article will fill you in on the tips I've found that work for me and provided me with the fabulous fingernails I now have.

Plop-plop, Fizz-Fizz

Did you know that Alka-seltzer is wonderful for your cuticles and nails? I didn't either until I actually saw a friend of mine, at a nail salon, popping two of the Alka-seltzer tablets in a dish and soaking her nails in them.

Apparently, the fizz and baking soda helps soften and smooth jagged cuticles, making them easier to push back and shape. Be sure to use warm water and soak for at least two minutes, then brush or buff the nail and cuticle lightly with a soft bristled toothbrush or nail brush, then shape your cuticles like you would normally.

Push - Don't Cut

Be sure when shaping your cuticles that you push the cuticle back instead of cutting it. The only time you will need to cut a cuticle is if you have a hangnailed cuticle, that is, a cuticle where a piece of the cuticle has broken off and is sticking up or out from the nail bed.

When this happens, cut only as far back as necessary to remove the hanging part of the cuticle, but do not cut the cuticle itself. This can lead to serious infection, pain, bleeding, and also slow down nail growth.

Protein - Good or Bad?

Takeaways
  • Fabulous fingernails don't have to be expensive.
  • Let your fingernails breathe as much as possible by keeping them unpainted and natural when you can.
  • Fingernails can be good indicators of changes in diet and health - watch for nail changes.

Excellent tips! My nails are so soft, they split and break constantly. I used to go the acrylic route, but don't have the time to maintain them. Great article!

Awesome! I had no idea about most of this stuff. Of course, my nails show it...

Great tips, My nails grow long but they are so thin that I can actually bend them all the way over. I used to do my own acrylic nails but man what a pain (and the smell is awful.

Thanks for the tips. I have dry, peeling nails that break so often that I've had to keep them short. I don't know what is going on with them! I think vitamins might help, and I will also try some the other tips.

While not an area of interest for me right now;), I did enjoy the information...tips which I can pass on to someone who does maintain nails.

Great tips.

great article! I like the toothpaste idea and the Alka Seltzer! Ive heard drinking soda, or anything with bicarbonate weakens both nails and teeth. Also drinking lots of water with lemon helps with growth too. But what to do about those pesky white calcium spots? hmmm.

Great tips. What would you suggest for nails that curve instead of growing straight? The nails of my index fingers start to curve down in the middle (but not the sides... it looks really funky) when they get much past the ends of my fingers, so I always have short nails. Is there any way to correct that? I already take vitamins and gelatin pills every day.

Great info. I'm going to have to try the Alka-Seltzer tip, too :)

Awesome advice. I'm going to try a gelatin soak. I've heard about it, but never knew it if was worth the time or not.

Thanks for this great article, Michy! I was a nail-biter from the time I was a youngster until about sophomore year of college. I had tried numerous ways to stop biting before then, but I guess I figured out something during my second year of college that finally worked. Now, I rarely bite, but my nails are impossible! They're so weak (I have had a couple manicures done, but never got fake nails because I knew better) and they crack and break just as they start to get longer. My cuticles are also impossible. And the nails on my thumbs are awfully mishapen from so many years of biting down on the back part of the nail. I'll have to try some of your suggestions to see if they work; the nail hardener has just not been enough for my poor nails. I have yet to learn HOW to shape cuticles and push them back properly though...

Good information. Thanks. I learned some things and I am a "girly-girl".

Very thorough info. I've never had nice nails. They're very thin, and they don't look nice when long. I'll have to try the gelatin and nail hardener. Great article!

That's a great article Michy, I am going to have to try the Alka-Seltzer one.

I have short, stubby, ugly fingernails. I'm going to try the protein coats, i think. I've seen some cheap ones in the stores, but never knew what they did.
