Thanksgiving Clothing Drives in Lake Ronkonkoma

Lake Ronkonkoma Churches Step Up to the Job of Community Outreach

At Thanksgiving, even more than at other times of the year, it is important to remember those whose lives seem dark and empty. Just a small donation can brighten the life of someone less fortunate. A warm coat, a pair of gloves, a scarf, may be just what someone else really needs and will appreciate.

When the needy look to a place that is welcoming, nonjudgmental and will offer immediate assistance, the first place they often turn to is the local churches. And churches try to do the best they can in meeting the needs of those who seek their aid. There are several churches in the Lake Ronkonkoma area that have ongoing community outreach programs. Keep these churches in mind if you are seeking a place to drop off donations of clothing.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church, located at 315 Lake Shore Drive, is one. St. Mary's is that beautiful quaint-looking church with the lovely facade that you pass when making the drive past the lake. This church has been in its location since 1867. It runs a "nearly new" shop, which, according to its website, offers clothing to those in need due to low-income or a tragedy such as fire or theft.

United Methodist Church (aka the "Pumpkin Church"), 792 Hawkins Avenue, also offers outreach to the needy. Every year, in October, the Church sells pumpkins on its property to benefit those in need. Proceeds from the sales of the pumpkins, which, according to its website, are grown on an Indian reservation in Arizona and are "particulary thick-skinned and perfect for carving", go to local soup kitchens and other worthy causes. This church has an ongoing clothing drive and runs a thrift shop on the premises.

There are two Catholic churches in Lake Ronkonkoma that also have extensive outreach services. The Church of Elizabeth Ann Seton, 800 Portion Road, is advertising its "Advent Giving Tree" which will be on display in the lobby on November 30 and December 1. The church is accepting unwrapped gifts for its Advent donation drive.
