Attention NBA fans, I have a New Number 1 teams on my list of "The Greatest NBA Teams Never to Win an NBA Championship!"

The 2006/07 Dallas Mavericks - 67-15 Regular Season Record.

I was Shocked, totally Shocked that this Upset happened. I believe that it was the combination of 2 very important occurrences. The first of course being that the Golden State Warriors with Don Nelson coaching were riding a tremendous hot streak entering the playoffs. They had, as I noted in my article on predicting the 2007 playoffs, won 9 of their last 10 games to qualify on the last day of the regular season. Secondly, the were matched against a Dallas Maverick team that they did match up very well with personal wise, plus playing a Maverick team that, for whatever reason had problems this series, playing their free-flowing style of game. Maybe it was simply the match-up of the two teams, or maybe it was Nelson's previous knowledge of the Mav's, most notably the coach Avery Johnson, who was Nelson's assistant when he coached in Dallas and Dirk Nowitzki, the odds-on favorite to win the Leagues MVP award. Or maybe it was simply the pressure of trying to get back to the Finals. For this entire series, with the exception of the end of game 5, Nowitzki just seemed to be totally dis-interested in what was going on, or he was so frustrated in the Warrior's defense on him that it just completely took him out of his game. Lets look at this series. In the 4 Warrior victories, they outscored the Mav's by an average of 15 points (105 to 90) in the 2 Dallas wins the average for Dallas was a 9 point margin (115-106). The Warrior's held the Mavericks to below 40% shooting in 3 of their wins, with Dallas shooting 44% in their game 4 loss.

Takeaways
  • Golden State outscored the Mavericks by 15 points in their 4 wins.
  • The Warriors held Dallas to below 40% shooting in 3 of their 4 victories.
Did You Know?
This was the first time since the NBA went to a 7 game first round series that a number 8 seed has defeated a number 1 seed.

Greatest Team to not win the title are the 90's Utah Jazz and the 2000's Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. Those teams would have won titles in other eras, except there were great teams knocking them out every year. For the Jazz, they were the Bulls. For the Kings, the Lakers, and the Suns could never get past the Spurs. Dallas was not a great team who never won it, they were just never good enough. All the teams above, were.

Dude you need to chill a little. Although can you tell me who it was that lost to the Heat in last seasons Finals? Wasn't Dirk, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, DeSagana Diop, Stackhouse and Dampier on the team last season also? Everyone has their own opinion, Why not write your own article esponding your views on this subject. Point that can't be argued is that no other team won as many regular season games as this years Maverick team and did not win the NBA title except for that Boston Celtic team in 72/73, and at least they made it to the conference finals and didn't lose to an 8th seed.

This article is so wrong for so many reasons. For one, this is just one year of the Mavericks core team. The greatest teams never to win a championship title is usually given to a team that had a great team for 4-5 years but never won anything. The Utah Jazz with Malone/Stockton come to mind. Second, no team that loses in the FIRST round to ANY team deserves to be called great. The regular season means absolutely nothing. Just last season my hometown Pistons won a franchise-best 64 wins and it meant nothing. If you can't at least get to the conference finals with a 67 win team, it is pathetic and embarrassing. No one will remember this team as great.
