Minnesota Timberwolves 2009 Season Preview

The Kevin McHale era is finally over in the twin cities. General Manager-Interim Coach McHale was fired after destroying what was once a competitive team. McHale's greatest accomplishment during his tenure was helping his real team the Boston Celtics by giving them Kevin Garnett while blocking the Los Angeles Lakers from landing him. New General Manager David Kahn has dismantled McHale's "vision" in a blizzard of moves and created a new mess he calls "rebuilding."

Prior to draft day, Kahn engineered a trade with Washington sending Randy Foye and Mike Miller for Eton Thomas, Darius Songaila, Oleksiy Pecherov and a first round draft pick. That pick turned into number five and Kahn chose Spanish teenage point guard Ricky Rubio and came right back at number six with another point guard in 5'11" Jonny Flynn. Rubio refused to sign leaving Minnesota with a potentially wasted high draft pick. Now Flynn is starting point guard with journeyman Jason Hart serving as back up. Number 18 pick Ty Lawson was traded to Denver for future considerations. Why trade a promising rookie to a division rival? The 28th pick is shooting guard Wayne Ellington from North Carolina.

Thomas was traded to Oklahoma City for Damien Wilkins and Chucky Atkins who was waived. Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith and Mark Madsen were dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers for Quentin Richardson who was spun around to Miami for Mark Blount. Nathan Jawai was acquired from Dallas for a pick. Songaila and Bobby Brown were dealt to New Orleans for Antonio Daniels who was waived. Gone from last season are Rashad McCants, Rodney Carney, Kevin Ollie, Jason Collins and Shelden Williams. Ramon Sessions and Aleksander Pavlovic signed as free agents.
