I'm in love with digital photography because I can pretty much triple or quadruple the number of photographs I took on a vacation and store and use them for a fraction of the cost I
used to spend. Five hundred photographs amounted to about $300 in development costs. But even digital travel photography has difficulties. Here's the essential equipment to bring along on your trip that will help ensure the success of your photographs.

Travel Photography Essential # 1 : Spare Batteries

I find this one out the hard way when I discovered my battery was almost out of juice after the third day in China. I was completely out of commission and had to drive my husband nuts saying, please, please take the picture of that sign or that landscape. Our marriage survived but I did ensure that I had three batteries, one that could be charging, one in use in the camera and a third just in case there wasn't power. Don't forget batteries for your flash, too.

Travel Photography Essential # 2 : Spare SD Chips

Depending on the size of SD chip and the resolution of pictures you're taking, you can hold 100-500 pictures, sometimes even more. I found I liked one chip per day or place. It helped make it easier to sort the pictures on my return and made it less likely I'd lose my whole trip if I lost the SD chip. I managed to pick up smaller 1MB chips for about $10 on sale so having several turned out to be less expensive than one larger sized.

Travel Photography Essential # 3 : Laptop

A laptop makes it easier to review your photographs and get rid of the ugly ones off the chip by deleting the file. Doing the same operation on the camera takes much longer and uses up your battery.

Travel Photography Essential # 4 : SD Reader

An SD chip reader makes it easier to view your photographs on your laptop and edit them. Plugging your camera into the computer also works but an SD reader is low cost, lightweight and easy to use.

Travel Photography Essential # 5 : Flash

A camera flash allows you to take indoor, low lighting condition and night time pictures with ease and helps complete the story of your travel.

Travel Photography Essential # 6 : Tripod

Great list.
Fantastic advice & list. :)
Great list. I agree that they all are essential photography items.
Great information :)
Great list, Sheri! These definitely are essentials! :)
I agree with this list!
Wow, that'd take up a whole suitcase! I always make sure I have scads of lithium batteries. I think rechargeables are crap. good list. I have a chip that holds 500 pics. At Sam's Club, that's $65 at 13 cents a pic.
good list
It is amazing how the art has changed, I used to go to Fan Fare ever year, the camera, film, flash and zoom lens were the necessaries.
great list...this could double as a gift list for photographers!
