Iron Deficiency is the Most Common Deficiency Among People

According to Dr. Timothy Stemmler from Wayne State University during his lecture at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, iron deficiency is the most common deficiency among people.

According to Stemmler about 500 million people in the world and 5 million in the US have some sort of iron deficiency. Iron deficiency has been linked to such diseases such as Anemia, Parkinson's, and Fredreich's Ataxia which is the most common hereditary deficiency. The result is reduced levels of frataxin which helps transport iron to the body.

According to Stemmler both genetic factors; such as cases in which a person cannot absorb iron in his or her system and environmental factors are contributions of this deficiency. The environmental factors according to Stemmler include diets that are rice-based which do not have significant amounts of iron, and foods high in iron such as spinach and broccoli could help increase the amount of iron in the body.

According to Stemmler for regions where the diet is heavy on rice, scientists are experimenting with rice that have been genetically formed to include a significant source of iron..Other Treatments include the use of antioxidants (which include food) and the use of gene reversal which is still at its early stages.

Stemmler presented his research of 9 years with Andy Dancis a Professor from the University of Pennsylvania and with funding from the American Heart Association and the National Institute of Health. And is a member of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Wayne State University in Detroit.
