Why do Peruvians have better sex? Is it something they put in their water? Do they have Viagra in Peru? Are men and women healthier there? If you ask Carmen Gonzalez, she will tell you it is the frog juice she whips up every day at her countertop restaurant in eastern Lima, Peru. Fifty customers a day (or more) come into her restaurant waiting for their afternoon delight. Not that delight...that comes after they drink the milkshake-like liquid, made in a blender, with frog juice that will sting the throat.

Gonzalez keeps an aquarium at the restaurant full of about 50 or 60 frogs. When someone orders the sex drive juice, she plucks a frog from the aquarium and bangs it against the tiles to kill it. She then proceeds to make two incisions in its belly and peels off the skin, much like we did in Biology 101. Into the blender goes three ladles of hot, white bean broth, two big spoons of honey, some raw aloe vera plant, and several tablespoons of maca. Then she drops the frog into the blender. Mix, mix, swirl, swirl, and whala..."Peruvian Viagra" that sells for around $.90.

One housewife and mother is a regular customer at Carmen's restaurant. She is the mother of five and is from the city of Huancayo in the highlands where the drink is common. She says, "It gives you power." Customers treat themselves at all times of the day, whenever they get the urge, whether it is morning, noon, or night. The drink is starchy tasting, but apparently worth it.

Maca, one of the drink's ingredients, is an Andean root believed to boost stamina and sex drive, as well as cure asthma. Some Andean cultures believe it has powers to also cure bronchitis, anemia and sluggishness. The powerful aphrodisiac may increase brain activity according to those who revere the root. They may have maca confused with sexual arousal which has been known to increase brain activity as well. Whatever it is - people in Peru seem to need that daily boost.

Catchy Title... Good writing. I'll pass on frog juice. Ewww. But great article!

bytheway, I am an animal lover too but I see no reason to take offense with this article. It isn't as if you are asking us to do anything cruel (and the woman does kill the frogs before blending them, just like the butcher does before your burgers get to Micky D's). Again, great writing

ICK! I don't care what it does for your sex drive, I don't think an amphibian could get down my throat--blended or not! Great writing

Well-written and I love the title, but feel SO BAD for the frogs!

You're an excellent writer, but as I am an aminal lover, I found this article to be too upsetting to finish reading.

This is probably the most disgusting thing I have ever read.

Noted, Rachael - thank you. I used Whala as a parity of Voila. A synonym of whala is drub - of which one meaning is to beat the ground, pound or throb. The way in which Carmen pounds the frog on the ground, and the common misuse of the word whala for voila - I thought would add to the humor of the story.

Just for the record, the word that sounds like "Whala!" is actually spelled "Voila!" It's French. :)
