Many people who own cats own more than one. For these people cats fighting is not an abnormal thing. However, the fighting of your cats may lead you to wonder just why they do this. It is true that most cats only fight from time to time and not on a continuous basis. When a cat is not happy about a chosen situation, they let it be known by picking a fight. Cats are territorial. When another cat enters what they consider to be their territory, this can trigger a fight. Even cats which share the same house have their own little areas in the house which they consider to be theirs.
A cat is very defensive of their territory be it a male or female cat. Many times the female cat is even more so than the male. They can show their displeasure by swatting, and hissing.
It doesn't matter if your male cat is neutered or not when it comes to controlling their position in the household. Male cats will commonly strive to retain social ranking among other cats.
When cats get in the fighting mode and one backs down by walking away, the in pending fight is usually given up. If the fight is not avoided then the cats will start to attack each other going after the neck of their opponent. They will end up falling on their backs kicking and scratching one another. There is usually no need to be concerned about the cats really injuring one another.
There can be times when cat fighting can become serious and you may feel you must stop them. If this happens, be careful how you break the fight up. Even if you cat is normally a sweet and kind cat, while in the mist of a fight they may very well scratch and bite you as well. Take a water spray bottle and squirt it on the cats to startle them out of their fight. In addition, some people find success in making a sudden loud noise. When your cat gets a bite from another cat, the wound is small the size of the other cat's teeth. These holes which are left as a result of the bite tend to close up in a few hours trapping any bacteria which were in the cat's mouth in the flesh of the other cat.
