Five Ways to Wear a Pompadour Hairstyle

Pop singer Rihanna's chameleon-like hair changes have inspired many different celebrities to step outside the box. Her latest 'do—the Pompadour—is a style reminiscent of the 1950's. Vintage styles typically make a comeback. But interpreting them your own way can be kind of tricky. It takes a keen eye (and a sense of daring) to reinvent yourself utilizing avant garde techniques. If you're thinking about taking the leap by wearing a Pompadour, there are quite a few ways to make this hair style your own.

"Up, Up, and Away" - Janelle Monae (singer)

Before Rihanna made this style popular, alternative soul singer Janelle Monae incorporated the pompadour into her look as part of her kitschy "shtick." She typically wears her natural mane is tucked in the back, with the top swept high over the hairline. While her 'do is extreme in comparison to some, the look can easily be balanced by wearing understated clothing. Trade Monae's outlandish suits and think "naughty librarian"; pair a sexy pencil skirt with a more casual, trendy blouse.

The "Bob-adour" - Marion Cotillard (French actress)

This style is a little bit "faux-hawk" with a tinge of pompadour. If you have a chin length bob, pull sides in and secure with gel, a styling wax, or pins. Backcomb the hair over the crown; lift with a round brush to create volume. Leave the ends of the bob straight and neatly trimmed so as not to look "dated." If you're still unsure of how this style looks, simple Google Marion Cotillard's "bob-adour" 'do at the London premiere of film, "Public Enemies" (starring Johnny Depp.)

Flowing Pompadour - Anne Hathaway (actress)
