Twilight Barbie Dolls a Logical, Profitable Merger

Twilight Barbie is the last product merger Twilight and Barbie haven't done yet. But Twilight Barbie is set to take off, as Twilight Barbie dolls of Bella and Edward are now available on Amazon. The timing of Twilight Barbie is obvious, since the long awaited release of Twilight: New Moon is now only weeks away. Twilight Barbie obviously won't make Team Edward and Team Jacob anticipate the sequel more than they already do - although Team Jacob might feel slighted by the Twilight Barbie dolls.

Plastic Barbie dolls in the likeness of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are now available to purchase. Barbie herself isn't dressed in Twilight garb, but Bella and Edward are now equally as marketable as Barbie is, if not more so. The dolls come out just under three weeks before New Moon finally arrives in theaters on November 20.

The Twilight Barbie collection doesn't have any likeness of Jacob, the third leg in the New Moon love triangle. Since Jacob has his shirt off for the majority of the New Moon teasers, they could have saved a little money by not giving the Jacob doll a shirt either. But it is only Team Edward that will have the most fun with the Twilight dolls.

Combining these two franchises is a logical and profitable step, although the vampires still have a ways to go to match Barbie's longevity. Teen vampires may just be a fad, but Barbie is an institution. And in a way, both products have the same critics.

Those who haven't given themselves to Bella and Edward complain that the books and movies are shallow drivel, which sets feminism a few decades back. But while Bella is often attacked for being a poor female stereotype, she has nothing on the complaints Barbie has gotten from feminists for decades.

Twilightand Barbie are both regarded as fare for little girls, and both institutions are often slandered for sending the wrong messages to young girls and women. For Barbie's target audience, some stay loyal to her forever, while others grow up and wonder what they saw in her to begin with. Once Twilight's target audience grows up, it may follow the same pattern.
