The Best and Worst of Travel Neck Pillows

Today, a lot of airlines are cutting costs by removing travel pillows but that doesn't mean that you have to give up your comfort. I remember the first travel pillow I ever had, and this was before companies were making these pillows. I used to travel a lot when I was
a teen so my mother sewed me a custom neck pillow that I could take anywhere. I remember it was made from an old pair of my little sisters blue footie pajamas, which was half the reason it was so soft and comfortable. She had the right idea and today, the market offers lots of different choices when it comes to travel pillows.

Some are inflatable, washable, solid, and most are easy to travel with. A travel pillow supports your neck and head, providing comfort and helping to avoid pain, especially when traveling far distances. Many travel pillows will now allow you to sleep upright without straining your neck to the side or back wards. I've personally tested 6 brands of travel neck pillows for affordability, comfort, ease of care, and pack-ability. The following list details the best and the worst of travel neck pillows.

Best
HappiNeck Therapeutic Pillow - http://www.imakproducts.com - $35.00
Out of all 6 pillows this one topped my list. Unlike most neck travel pillows the HappiNeck is slightly squared and rests comfortably over the entire neck and shoulder area. This pillow is semi-firm and when I had it on it reminded me of a couch cushion-a plush one. This pillow was large enough for me to rest my chin on either side. The HappiNeck was also a bit thicker than the rest of the pillows allowing for better support of my neck.

Comfort Travel Pillow - http://www.eaglecreek.com - $15.00
Of the inflatable neck pillows that I tried, this one was the best. This U-shaped pillow comes with a removable soft fleece cover that is machine washable, and it also has an air release valve on the side if you want to release some of the pressure in the pillow. This pillow is super light and inflates/deflates in about 2 seconds, making it easy to store in your carry-on. This pillow was very comfortable but like most inflatables, you could still feel the stiffness of the plastic underneath.

  • Unlike most neck travel pillows the HappiNeck is slightly squared and fits comfortably.
  • The Comfort Travel Pillow was also really comfortable, and easy to care for.
  • The millet hull pillow was not right for me, and the quality of the product was the best.

I agree with Halle. I love my Bucky! It's the most comfortable pillow out there. I use the Utopia (buckwheat hull filled as apposed to millet).

Thanks for the tip on the A Touch of Satin travel pillow. After reading your review, I ordered one for myself and one for my husband. I have flown twice with them in the last six weeks and they really are as comfortable as you said AND my hair does look much better getting off the plane. My husband actually feel asleep using it and he NEVER sleeps on the plane. I also use it on my sofa like you do. It's a perfect nap pillow. Thanks again and great article!

If you're traveling then you might want to get one of these. I've tried many a travel pillow during my years in the skies. I have finally found one that feels like my pillow on my bed and gives me the support I need when flying or just stuck in the airport for a few hour delay. It has a satin pillowcase, so my hair doesn't get stuck in one spot while I'm sleeping on the plane or when I have a flight delay and I nap in the airport. I don't get off the flight with the "bed head" look. I can go to a meeting or lunch with clients and my hair looks great. The pillow itself is designed to feel like down and it's hypoallergenic. Both the satin pillowcase and the pillow are completely washable. When I'm home I throw it on the sofa and use it as a nap pillow. Now I won't travel without it. I wound up getting a satin pillowcase to take with me to use in my hotel room. The company I purchased the travel pillow from is A Touch Of Satin. I absolutely could not disagree more about the Komfort Kollar. I fly over 200,000 miles per year and this is the best I have tried. It supports your chin so that your head does not drop. It deflates so that if fits easily in your briefcase so you are never without it. I am on my 3rd one as I have lost one and one wore out at the inflation port. I would not do without this. You do have to make certain you select the proper neck size though. If you don't the chin support is not worth while.
