Little did we know in years past, that thieves would turn to going through our garbage in order to gain knowledge about our lives to give them the belief that they are actually making their own lives better by stealing our identities. Many people take out their trash and never think twice about it, but should they?

Identity thieves can find out all sorts of information from your trash, and for some, digging in your trash is just the beginning of their attack on your identity. Even junk mail can contain information that is useful for an identity theft. Ever get credit card offers in the mail? You had better start running them through a shredder before you toss them into the trash can.

Buying a shredder is a great investment whenever you consider the alternative, of someone going through your trash and finding documents that you never would have dreamed could harm you. Paper shredders are not that expensive and some can even shred credit cards and compact disc's, which is another great way to prevent identity theft. When shredding credit cards, I suggest picking up the fragments of the credit cards that have the numbers on them, and put them in separate trash bags, or even putting them in trash bags on different days so that there is no way the perpetrator can piece them back together.

Sadly, an identity theft can live right across the street from you or across the world, and they gather as much information about you as they possibly can in order to steal your credit or identity. Be very cautious who you let work on your computer or let into your home. Even going to a restaurant and paying with a credit card can be risky business, with so many strangers having access to you credit card number.

Takeaways
  • Identity thieves can find out all sorts of information from your trash.
  • Buying a shredder is a great investment whenever you consider the alternative.
  • Sadly, an identity theft can live right across the street from you or across the world.
Did You Know?
With so many ways for an identity thief to obtain information about you and your finances, always be on your guard, and as a general rule, if a document has your name on it, shred it.
