Many small companies express concern about the complexity of managing their people in a small company. The process usually becomes cumbersome when the number of employees approaches 10-15. This is usually the point where CEO's are realizing that they enjoy running the operations of their business; however, know very little about the complexities of managing their human resources effectively. Most CEO's will quickly determine the need for effective HR expertise in one of two ways: 1) Legal & Regulatory claims or litigation 2) Skyrocketing costs for employee benefits. Both issues are a growing concern and many small business do not have the HR expertise within their staff to handle the advanced complexities with managing people effectively.
There are opportunities to help these businesses however. There are independent HR consultants, Professional Employer Organizations (PEO's), Staffing Optimization Solutions to name a few. Employers can tap into the knowledge that they need while also achieving mentoring capabilities for their on-site staff. Everyone wins in this scenario. This is a very cost effective manner for small businesses to manage their people effectively and provide themselves the time to focus on what they do best---grow their business. HR professionals may come on site once a month and be available virtually to assist their on-site staff with issues. Their expertise in effectively managing human resources provides quick and knowledgeable expertise, which often avoids costly mistakes that an employer can make when managing people. Costs of turnover mount quickly, as well as recruitment, advertising, legal fees, and unnecessary overtime. Many solutions are available to employers if they know where to go and who to ask. HR outsourcing provides that knowledge and availability.
