Making soap at home is easier than ever. You no longer have to mess with lye and other dangerous materials. Block of glycerin can be purchase at most craft stores and larger chain stores. Fragrance oils, herbs, food items, can be added to customize your soap. All you need are a few items and you are on your way to making your own personalized soap.

Items needed:

2 lbs. Glycerin soap (usually comes in white or clear varieties, your choice)

Cutting board

Knife

Large pot to boil water in

Glass bowl or measuring cup that fits in the pot like a double boiler.

Ladle

Wooden spoon

Molds in whatever shape you want (I like using old muffin tines, loaf pans, etc.)

Fragrance oils, if you desire

Color dyes, if you desire

Dried herbs, oatmeal, flowers, etc., if you desire

First, some blocks of glycerin are scored for cutting. Cut the glycerin into smaller cubes along the score lines, or if yours isn't scored, just make 1.5" to 2" cubes. This will help it melt faster. I cut mine on an old cutting board. Because it is soap, and will wash away, it's not a big deal, but I have set my board, spoon, molds aside for just soapmaking.

Takeaways
  • Fragrance oils, dyes, dried herbs, flowers, and food item can be used to personalize your soap.
