Justice and Healing: Richmond High School Gang Rape

As the courts start to process the young men arrested for the gang rape of a student at Richmond High School, the nation tries to absorb the facts of this horrific crime. It is alleged that ten males raped the victim while about 20 other males watched the crime while laughing and taking pictures and videos.

Donations

Donations for the young woman who was attacked may be sent to: Richmond High Jane Doe Account, #041-30-1188, Mechanics Bank, 3170 Hill Top Mall Road, Richmond, CA 94806.

As this young woman attempts to heal and go on with her life she will face many struggles. She has experienced something that few of us can imagine. She will likely deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.

She will also have to decide how to continue her education and what to do with her future. She has to grapple with many difficult issues.

Thus the donation fund is a way to help her as she tries to regain normalcy and her health. If possible, please donate. Her young life has been traumatized. She is probably devastated that so many people were at the scene of the crime and did not help her. Donating to this fund is a way to show her that people do care, that she is not alone in this traumatic situation.

Causes of Violence

Jay Leonhardy, head of Richmond's Youth Works, told SF Gate "This attack was about street culture, and the need to change that mind set. It's not something you change overnight, and it is not unique to Richmond... It's everywhere."

"No" Means No

The SF Gate reports that the young woman said "no" when the males asked her for sex. What happened next is classic rape. No means no and any young man who does not understand that must seek guidance.

The Young Woman

The young woman involved in this attack is described by a teacher at Richmond High as "an emotional, deeply caring girl, the type who would care so much if this happened to another girl" according to SF Gate. Her parents have asked the Richmond community to "channel your anger into positive action."
