The History Behind the Historic Santa Maria Inn

2
The beautiful historic Santa Maria Inn is located on the central coast of California in the city of Santa Maria. The Santa Maria Inn was built by Frank McCoy. The inn opened in 1917. The inn is 92 years old.

The Santa Maria Inn was the only stylish hotel in Santa Maria at that time. The other hotels in town were the ordinary type that you would have seen at that time.

The Santa Maria Inn became very popular. It was built in a wonderful location which was only 8 blocks from the center of town. So, it was centrally located and easy for the residents and people visiting Santa Maria to get to.

The reason the Santa Maria Inn was so popular was that after the city of Santa Maria was built, the original highway was built through the city. The original highway would be what is known today as highway 101. Highway 101 now passes to the east of Santa Maria.

With the Santa Maria Inn being just blocks from the center of town and with the highway going through the middle of town, it brought a lot of business to the hotel. People traveling from the San Francisco area to the Los Angeles area would often stop at the Santa Maria Inn to spend the night before traveling on to their destination.

The Santa Maria Inn was and looked very upscale. Because of this it brought in a lot of well to do people and a lot of movie stars. Some of the movie stars to sign the guest book at the Santa Maria Inn were: Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino, Cecil B. DeMille, Jack Benny, Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Kim Novak, and John Wayne.

The Santa Maria Inn did very well as did the city of Santa Maria until the 1950's. It was during this time that highway 101 was built outside the city, which caused the heavy traffic to stop going through the town.

The Santa Maria Inn suffered because of this change. Fewer people stopped and eventually the hotel had to close.

Hope came back to the Santa Maria Inn in 1981. It's doors were reopened and it went through a renovation project that brought it back to life.

The Santa Maria Inn now has a six story tower that was added and there is now gift shops, health and fitness facilities, a bar, and banquet rooms which has helped bring people back to the hotel.
