Yankees Defeat Phillies in Game 6, Win 2009 World Series

Yankee's Win!!! Yankee's Win!!! Yankee's Win!!!

Rejoice, New York baseball fans! The New York Yankees won the 2009 World Series Wednesday night, 7-3, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in Game Six. This is the 27th World Series win for the Yanks, and their first since 2000.

In the 2000 MLB World Series, New York baseball fans had mixed emotions as the Yankees beat out their fellow New Yorkers, the Mets. There were no mixed feelings in the Big Apple early Thursday, though, as fans began celebrating in the streets a full day before the big victory parade!

Godzilla Takes Philadelphia....in New York

New York Yankees designated hitter, Hideki Matsui, may have been born and raised in Japan, but Wednesday night, he solidified his place as a true New Yorker as he held a vital role in his team's 2009 World Series win.

Hideki Matsui, took the World Series Most Valuable Player trophy home following the Wednesday night championship win. Matsui maintained high percentage averages throughout the 2009 World Series both at bat and on base, and stepped up to the plate just 13 times during the six-game series. Still, in just over a dozen "at-bats", Matsui earned that MVP with a home-run, a double, and eight total runs.

Philadelphia Goes Down Swinging

Most of the action in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series came by the sixth inning, with neither the Phillies nor Yankees scoring any runs for the remainder. The Yankee's billion-dollar-plus investment in their new Bronx ballpark was apparently worth the cash, as home team held onto three separate victories in one shot: a Game Six win, the Series win and another notch in their "Most World Series Won" world record!

Philadelphia fans were hoping for a baseball miracle before the Yank's stole the show. Phillies fans were exuberant following an 8-6 win by the Phillies in Game 5 on Monday. Philadelphia had started the World Series off with a win in Game 1. However, even an opening game Phillies win and an 8-6 defeat in Game 5 couldn't keep the New York beast at bay for long.

  • Hitter Hideki Matsui proved a powerhouse during Game 6 of the 2009 MLB World Series.
  • Yank's put down Phillies, 7-3, by sixth inning.
  • Wednesday's Game 6 victory marks the Yankee's 27th World Series win.
