From Miss to Ma'am: When Did that Happen?

One day as I was crossing Michigan Avenue, I heard a woman's voice from behind me shouting "Ma'am! Ma'am! You dropped your scarf!" It wasn't until I heard "scarf" that I realized she was talking to ME, and that indeed the scarf I'd worn that day was no longer around my neck. But I was mortified that she referred to me as "ma'am" instead of "miss"! When did I turn into a "ma'am"?

I think the first thing I noticed was that "Miss" generally doesn't wear neck scarves - except the bulky type to keep warm in winter. Misses don't wear the type of flat, rubber-soled, practical shoes like I was wearing. Generally, they are obviously younger (under 30) women - in stiletto heels, short, tight clothes, with trendy handbags. Though I'm one year away from my AARP membership, I'm lucky enough to look 5-10 years younger than the age indicated by the birth date on my driver's license. But like most women my age, I dress for comfort rather than style and fashion - a sure sign of "ma'am-dom"!

I am SICK of people saying it is a sign of respect. Respect for who??? When did I "earn" this "sign of respect"? Why is it considered respect when it consistently OFFENDS me? I had a stupid guy outside the grocery store try to shove ma'am up my ass, trying to convice me that it was respectful. Well, you know what? I did not get a special award for turning ALL 35 of my years old (because wow, that is so old) that I should get ma'amed. Is this some right of passage? Are you making assumptions of me? Do you even know me? STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why did you not respect me like this 5 years ago? What have I done in the last five years to deserve this? If you think I am that old, well then kiss my wrinkled old ass........but do it in about 50 years.

I'm 23 and I get called "ma'am" often enough to make me consider checking myself into a nursing home. It's a really desexifying term, in my opinion. But to make a joke out of it, I purposefully call girls who are obviously under twenty-five (you know, the Paris Hilton wannabes) "ma'am" because, hey, if I'm a "ma'am", so are they. It makes me feel good.
