Have you ever wondered if someone is lying to you? Of course we all have, and sometimes we may even lie to cover up a little thing we have done or didn't do. For instance have you been late to an appointment and you say that a train delayed you? You know that if you would have left five minutes earlier you wouldn't have been late, but you don't want to get in trouble. I have done that. I hate to admit to it because it is so juvenile. I am talking about more important things although. Here are some ways of telling if someone is telling you truth to you or if they are telling you a big fat lie.
A liar will answer your question with the words you used to ask the question.
"Did you eat the last piece of pie?"
"No I did not eat the last piece of pie."
An answer with a contraction is more likely to be truthful.
"No I didn't do it." This statement is more likely to be true than,
"No I did not do it."
If someone is lying to you they are more likely not to make direct statements to you. They will give you implied answers instead of a direct one.
"Would I do that to you?"
That should send up red flags instantly.
They may make up more elaborate details to their lie. They are uncomfortable with silence, and will not look at you directly. They may fidget and squirm.
Liars don't use many pronouns when they are conjuring up their lies. When someone is telling you the truth they will use more pronouns and speak more precisely.
If someone is speaking in a garbled, unintelligible way, using a softer voice, it is likely that they are not telling you the truth. Their sentences may be rather muddled and unclear.
If a person is lying they are relieved if you change the subject where one who is telling you the truth may be puzzled or confused by the shift in the conversation.
When someone is lying, his or her timing may be off. Their emotions don't synchronize with their expressions. You may give someone a gift they don't like but they don't want to hurt your feelings. They will either give you a phony smile that lasts too long, or become very animated.
If someone says, "I love you," and he or she is frowning when they say it, they are probably lying.
