Since the beginnings of television advertising in the late 1940's, many people have found that sometimes, the commercial advertisements are as clever and as compelling as the television shows during which the product is being advertised. One of the most memorable components of many television commercials, both from yesterday and today, is the character portrayed in the commercial. Here are the Top Five Most Memorable television commercial characters.

The Top Ten Television Commercial Characters #1-Mr. Whipple, the storekeeper
Beginning in 1965, commercials for Charmin Bathroom Tissue began featuring a homemaker in a grocery store doing her weekly shopping. She made the rounds, squeezing the produce, squeezing the bread, and just as she's about to select her package of Charmin, the camera pans to another aisle in the store. On the other aisle, the storekeeper, Mr. Whipple, laments about the lady squeezing every product, then he dashes over to the Charmin display, where he points out the sign that says 'Please don't squeeze the Charmin' For twenty years, Mr. Whipple reminded us all that, even though we wanted to buy the Charmin, we shouldn't squeeze it. This was one of many television commercials whose advertising slogan took a permanent place in pop culture, and in the everyday American lexicon.

The Top Ten Television Commercial Characters #2-the Dunkin Donuts Donut Maker
The next commercial in the list is one that appealed to those of us with a sweet tooth. The Dunkin Donuts Donut Maker was showcased in commercials for Dunkin Donuts for ten years. He was often shown arriving home, and taking off his jacket, and then putting on his jacket as he goes out the front door of home, to work. As he left his home, he would utter the phrase "time to make the donuts" Eventually, the commercial progressed into the character playing a double role, as he would leave home his moniker, "time to make the donuts" would be followed by the twin character saying, "I made the donuts"

Takeaways
  • These television commerical characters enticed us to buy the products we all need.
  • These commercials are a reminder of a simpler time

I remember (the late) "Clara Peller" was the name of the actress who played the "Where's the Beef?" lady on Wendy's commercials. She was annoying, but funny at the same time.
