Sky Movies recently took a poll to estimate which were the five most watched movies of all time. The results were split up according to gender.

The men's list read as follows:

  1. Star Wars trilogy
  2. Aliens
  3. The Terminator
  4. Blade Runner
  5. The Godfather

No surprises there. The guys opted for mindless, testosterone-busting shoot-em-ups. Well, perhaps The Godfather does require a modicum of intelligence - but it did come in at number five

Now for the women's list:

  1. Dirty Dancing
  2. Star Wars trilogy
  3. Grease
  4. The Sound of Music
  5. Pretty Woman

Now there was a surprise. With the possible exception of 'Sound of Music', not a chick flick, or a tear jerker, in the lot of them. I'm guessing most of the people polled were under 40, so one would not expect the old classics, but I definitely would have expected something like 'Sleepless in Seattle' or - at the very least - 'Legally Blonde'. Instead, we find a movie about dirty dancing, one about a prostitute - and Star Wars. Star Wars! Girls, Girls! Star Wars is like the final frontier for us guys - the one thing we can call our own. Don't take that away from us.

So what does this imply? Are women becoming more butch? I'm not talking about feminism here. I have no beef with women opening their own doors and paying for meals. But what can one infer when two - and possibly three - of the top five movies are high on testosterone? In this competitive age we live in, it would probably be naïve to expect girls to be sugar and spice and all things nice; but what happened to the feminine graces? What happened to coquettish charm and appeal that did not need to depend on silicon implants?

I am aware that the above outburst betrays my advanced years, but I don't care. I belong to a generation where romance was classy, when a besotted swain drank champagne from his lady love's slipper; where flowers and candy on a first date were not treated with scorn and a man could compose a sonnet to his sweetheart, without the object of his affection breaking into uncontrollable giggles.

I honestly cannot fathom why modern women want to be equal to men. For generations past, they have been far superior. Why climb down now?
