Whale Watching in Ecuador
It was a cloudy August day as we drove into Puerta Lopez, a small fishing village in the Manabi Providence in Ecuador. The trip from Guayaquil was uneventful except for a few holes in the road. We were there to watch the whales and to relax a little bit.
Puerto Lopez is a laid back town and is very tranquil through the week. If you like a lot of attention and a quieter atmosphere, then the weekdays are for you. The weekends get very loud as a lot of tourist pile into town. Music and action goes on into the wee hours of the morning.
We stayed at the Ruta Del Sol Hotel for $38.00 a night for two nights. Samuel the Manager was very cordial and treated us like royalty. The Hotel is not fancy but very accommodating for its guest. The rooms are clean and they have air conditioning. The Hotel even has its own little restaurant. We drank our coffee in the mornings and we did eat one meal at the Hotel Restaurant. The Hotel does not have a website. The phone number to the Hotel is 011.593.5.230.0236. Samuel is the manager.
The restaurant we ate at the most was Rey Hojas. It is right next to the Hotel we stayed in, so access was easy for us. The tables are under a roof, but this is an open air restaurant. The food was good and the price of the food was excellent. Most of the things on the menu are sea food of course. The staff was very friendly and alert to your needs. The restaurant does not have its own website, but it is featured on Viva Travel Guide at http://www.vivatravelguides.com/
We also ate at one of the little hut cafes that they have next to the beach. The food was ok, but the service was very slow. The worker was friendly and spoke English, which he had learned years earlier.
