Ten of the Best Scenic, Breathtaking, and Magnificent Drives in the United States
From Coast to Coast There Are Endless Possibilities to Explore, Here Are the Top Contenders
While traveling across America it's hard to chose just which road to take. It can be a daunting task with endless possibilities. That's why what follows is my top ten list of don't miss drives.1. Route 6-Pennsylvania
One of my favorite, and also a local one for me, is Route 6. Route 6 traverses across the northern tier of Pennsylvania for over 400 miles (www.paroute6.com). I have spent many, many hours driving and taking in the spectacular views. While beautiful any time of the year I would caution anyone from driving this in the winter as there are many steep and curvy areas of this road. Fall is by far the best time to travel to see the sights. Some of the must see areas include Wyalusing Rocks which is located just west of Wyalusing and offers a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River below. There is a parking area along the road. We especially like the trail that wanders off to the left and out onto the rocks. This trail was obviously created and used by local teenagers and is not part of the official overlook. The trail is dangerous as there is no fencing and the rocks hang over the edge. I would not recommend taking children on the trail portion. Another favorite Route 6 stop for our family is Wellsboro, Pa. Wellsboro is home of the Penn Wells Hotel (www.pennwells.com), a good spot to rest for the night. Grab breakfast at the Wellsboro Diner, an affordable family friendly diner with great homemade foods. Spend the day exploring the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. With two overlooks near Wellsboro and the Pine Creek Rail Trail which allows for a bike ride through the Canyon we easily fill the entire day. Dinner is always at the Log Cabin Inn, located near Gaines, Pa. My children spend most of the dinner staring at the assortment of animals hanging on the walls while the adults are happy with the outstanding steaks and seafood that is offered. It wouldn't hurt to make reservations, especially if visiting on a weekend (814-435-8808). One last place of special interest to us is Cherry Springs State Park located near Coudersport. This is a great place for stargazing as there is close to zero light pollution.
