A Look at Feminism: Is it Really Helping?

Are Women Making Progress, or Coming Across as an Angry Minority Group?

As a woman, naturally I've had to put up with chauvinistic behavior in the past. But in spite of the obvious problems with gender equality in our society, I just don't think that the feminist approach is the best way to push for equality.

Although women aren't a minority group, I feel as if we've been acting like one lately, and it's scared me to the point that I wonder if we're taking a step back instead of continuing to move forward. As I look at all the controversy that double standards are creating across the country, I realize that I don't want that to be the strategy by which we improve our standing in society. Women in general are so quick to look at the statistics regarding our gender in the workplace, but has anyone else considered that women weren't going to college as much as men thirty years ago? My Dad, who is in upper management, went to college back in the late 60s, but my mom didn't, so I can understand why my Dad would be in a better position to make more money. He also didn't have to give birth to me or my two brothers. Am I supposed to ignore the fact that if I decide to have children I will be me that gets pregnant, not my husband? My two brothers and I have all gone to college, and as times change, and the old executives are replaced by people from our generation, we'll probably start to notice some changes in the demographic of the workplace without having to draw so much negative attention to ourselves.

Today, more women are going to college than men; it's a complete turn around from thirty years ago. And the impression I've gotten from speaking with people from many different backgrounds is that even men realize that women are more committed, more diligent, just as intelligent, and definitely a lot easier to work with than men (in general, obviously not in every case). And with customer service being more critical than ever, companies need more and more employees who are understanding and good with people.

Although this image is highly offensive, what do we have to gain by getting up in arms over it? That only reaffirms the convictions of the genius who would display something like this.

You mean like african americans and Hispanics are not seen as classes to be propped up and protected? Gender equality took thousands of years to get into the open. Anyone trying to stuff it back in the closet has an agenda.

How many women are going to 'throw a fit' as you said, when they don't get the job they applied for? Not many that I know of and if they did they don't deserve the job whether they are male or female.

Talking from a 58 y.o. perspective, I would advise you to just be true to yourself. Sounds trite, but it's worked for me, and sometimes it's the hardest thing to do. I've never been a feminist, I am just myself, for better or worse (and I've always gotten along better with men, for whatever reason). Don't even bother with that male/female political nonsense. It's a waste of time.

Good read. As long as women are seen as a class to be protected and propped up women will never be seen as equal. It's just the way it plays out logically. Personally, as a black male I understand the complaints of women but I think there is a separation among white feminists and black feminists. White feminists from one's I've spoken to really do not understand nor care about the issues of black women. You want to talk about minorities in the workplace and in the classroom black males more than any other group need one and a spokesperson.
