Michigan College Students Can Get In-state Tuition at Ohio Universities and Vice Versa
TOLEDO, Ohio -- College students are being hit the hardest in our nation's struggling economy. While most universities are raising tuition, the University of Toledo and Cleveland State University are offering in-state tuition to Michigan college students. Bowling Green State University is offering 50 percent off out-of-state tuition for Michigan students. Students from Toledo, Ohio and Windsor, Ontario can receive in-state tuition at Wayne State University. Oakland University offers in-state tuition to all students from the U.S., Canada and Mexico with a 3.2 GPA.
The University of Toledo offers in-state tuition for Michigan students with a 3.0 GPA. The $8,000 out-of-state tuition fee is waived for students who meet that requirement. Students who have a GPA higher than 3.0 can qualify for an additional $4,000 scholarship at UT. There are 310 Michigan freshmen students taking advantage of the program, as of the fall 2009 semester. The in-state tuition program began in 2006 and it also applies to students from all 50 states and Canada, however it is not promoted very much.
"This is our fourth year that we are actively recruiting in Michigan," said Lawrence J. Burns, Vice President of External Affairs at the University of Toledo. "In particular, southeast Michigan, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. We've seen a nice return for our investment. We've always had a reciprocal agreement with Monroe county, because it's so close. The Wayne-Oakland-Macomb county program, that's where our growth is coming from. Actually, the Monroe county is down a bit. We want to get that up again.
"In actuality, it really is a program that if you lived in Kingsville, Ontario, we would waive the out-of-state tuition if you had a 3.0. Hopefully, you're viewers have seen our billboards, our commercials, advertisements. It makes the University of Toledo a bigger bargain than it has been in past years. We're only an hour away from most people in Wayne-Oakland-Macomb county. It is really like a suburb of Detroit. Give us a look."
