2009 Heisman Trophy Candidates
The Heisman Trophy remains one of the most coveted awards in sports. The tradition goes back all the way to 1935 with such legendary figures such as Roger Staubach, O.J. Simpson, Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Herschel Walker and Barry Sanders winning the honor. Here today I want to take a look at some of the 2009 Heisman Trophy candidates as we come into the final weeks leading up to the presentation.
This season has been weird because with just a few games left there really hasn't been any single player rise above the rest as a leader for the honor. It should make for a very close race and some added interest to the presentation ceremony. Of course there is still time for people to be dropped and added from the short list but here are my top 5 2009 Heisman Trophy candidates.
1. Mark Ingram RB Alabama Crimson Tide
Could this be the third year in a row that a Sophomore wins the award? Personally I feel that Mark Ingram is the leader out of the 2009 Heisman Trophy candidates at the moment. There have been several voters on television and radio say that they feel the same way about the gritty running back. Something that he has in his favor is that Alabama has never had a Heisman Trophy winner and some voters feel that this would be a good year to change that piece of history. He has had a couple big games against Virginia Tech (185 yards and 2 touchdowns), South Carolina (269 yards and 1 touchdown) and LSU (158 yards). His season totals are currently resting at 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns.
2. Colt McCoy QB Texas Longhorns
