Talk of a fourth Spider-Man has been going around. Some fans and not fans of the first three movies are even discussing the concept of a fifth and sixth Spider-Man movie. Whether this would be a good choice of Columbia, the production company who produced the first three Spider-Man movies, may be decided from some factors.

Crunching Numbers

The first Spider-Man was a huge hit, it made $403,706,375 at the USA box office and in the rest of the world $417,900,000 bringing it global box office total to $806,700,000, which is only been surpassed by 14 movies which include 3 of the 4 Harry Potter movies and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Considering that the movie only had a budget of $139,000,000, estimated before the cost of distributing, and the opening USA weekend box office, $114,844,116 there was no surprise that there was a Spider-Man 2 made.

As for Spider-Man 2 there was an increase in the budget for the movie, $200,000,000 this time around and increase in what was expected from the box office for the movie. Spider-Man 2 opening weekend brought in $115,817,364 in the USA but was shown in over 500 more screens so the $973,248 increase was unimpressive but most of the time sequels don't do better but are made because a studio feels that they can get profit from continuing the story. Overall Spider-Man 2 made $373,377,893 at the USA box office and $410,200,000 at the international box office. However Spider-Man 2 did not surpass the first Spider-Man movie at the global box office when it brought in $783,577,893, $23,122,107 less than the first Spider-Man film.

Now we come to Spider-Man 3, the movie had an estimated budget of $258,000,000, that is $119,000,000 increase of the first Spider-Man film's budget and an increase $58,000,000 of the second Spider-Man film. The opening weekend box office in the USA was $148,000,000 for Spider-Man 3. So in short the opening weekend box office had a more than 20% increase than the first and second Spider-Man films.

  • I ask one question, do you want to see another Spider-Man?
Did You Know?
Numbers aren't everything, believe it or not some of the best movies, for one reason or another, do not become blockbusters at the box office.

Honestly I don't think they should do another. They tried to cram so much into Spiderman3 that it was just flat out boring. As an average movie goer, I think the second one was better. This is a great article and it is nice to see some stats!
