The magnitude of anticipation for Spider-Man 3 can only be compared to the magnitude of disappointment brought by the movie. Spider-Man 1 and Spider-Man 2 set the bar high so the third movie was supposed to be bigger and better; Spider-Man 3 was more or less longer and worse. The movie has some of the same effects as the first two that draw the viewer in, but in the long run number three falls short and the effects cannot get past the disappointment of the entire movie.

Unlike the villain Venom, who takes on its host and makes the host better, the movie takes on the host, Spider-Man 1 and 2, but it is worse. Spider-Man 3 has the potential and power of the first, but it falls short. The effects and action resemble the first two which is good, but it also brings back the plotlines of the first two which tend to bring the movie down. The romance between Peter Parker/Spider Man and Mary Jane Watson takes on the form of the first two movies, when the relationship starts out well, then falters, and then rekindles. With the love story it almost seems that the writers ran out of things to do, and this is the first problem you can see where you realize that the Spider-Man story has run out.

Another problem that shows the viewers that Spider-Man is at the end of the line would be the villains. The Sandman would seem to be a formidable opponent, but it was not done very well and just seemed to be a nuisance. The "new" Green Goblin/Harry Osborn was better than the Sandman, but eventually it seemed to get old and you just wish that the kept the Green Goblin out of this one for once. The major frustration with the villains would be Venom. The anticipation for the black-suited Spider Man was huge, but it faltered. The villain should have been in the movie much more and should have had a bigger impact, but because of the other two villains it played an equal part when it should have been brought to the forefront.

Takeaways
  • Spider-Man 3 falters.
  • Two many negatives to get past the positives.
  • Is hindered by how good the first two were.
