Now on DVD: Monsters Versus Aliens

2
When the movie Monsters versus Aliens came out at theaters, I wasn't really expecting it to be any good. A lot of movies focus on 3-D animation and I figured the plot would be a bit too simple.

I finally got a chance to watch it on DVD this past weekend and have to say it was better than expected.

I wouldn't rate this as highly as other animated films like Ice Age (or even Ice Age 3). But, compared to some of the movies I've seen in the past year, it definitely was pretty good.

The movie follows the character Susan (voiced by Reese Witherspoon), who is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day and turns into a giant woman. She is captured by government officials and taken to a secret compound, where she learns the government has been capturing and holding monsters since the 1950s. The monsters are prisoners until the planet is invaded by aliens and, when conventional weapons fail, they are asked to save the day.

The movie is a bit on the short side (the run time is listed as 94 minutes but it seemed shorter than that) and kind of predictable. But, there's a good mix of adventure and comedy. When we got the movie, I figured it would be geared more toward kids. But, there were things my wife and I enjoyed too. I personally liked the scenes on the alien spaceship where the alien clones were fooled by some pretty bad disguises. The scenes with the president in his war room were also classic; especially that part where the button for the coffee machine is identical to the one that launches nuclear weapons (why don't they label those things?).

Final opinion: The movie probably could have been a bit better but it still managed to be a fun way to spend an hour and a half.

Average Netflix Grade: 3.9 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 3 stars.
