The Government is Not the Enemy

Health Care Legislation is a Good Thing

The news that the House passed the Health care reform bill was a welcome relief. Passing this bill was a huge step toward raising the standard of living in the United States and improving the quality of life for all.

The senate must still reconcile the House bill with its own, and senators will face heavy lobbying during the weeks ahead. The stories of doom and gloom should begin to disappear.
Health care providers will begin to realize that millions of new "customers" are about to enter the health care market.

If the law achieves even part of its purpose, medical bills will not climb as quickly as they have in the past few years. Fewer people will be forced into bankruptcy by medical bills. People will no longer have to put off needed medical care because they cannot afford it. In short, Americans will have one less thing to worry about.

This is a day to be proud to be part of a democracy. The government did what millions of us asked it to do, and have been asking it to do for many years. There has not been much of that in the last ten years.

Lots of people heard that government is the problem. The Republican Party courted a brand of far-right conservative whose outlook is basically libertarianism. These people believe that abolishing the government will make us all better off. It is not uncommon to hear ordinary people talk about a city being "government controlled." People have heard the buzzwords repeated so many times that they have the illusion of truth. The government must be the enemy, or so many people would not be saying so.

They have been coached to resent the government and everything it does by conservative hate-speech radio. They and the talking heads they listen to have forgotten one very basic fact. In the United States of America, WE are the government. To say that the government is the enemy in this country is to say that the people of the United States are their own enemy.

These same government-haters are the ones who apply for social security and Medicare on the first day they become eligible. They support their local police and fire department, and they will call the police immediately if a neighbor's party becomes too loud.

  • In the United States WE are the government.
  • People believe that government is the problem because they have heard it over and over.

Healthcare is not a right but a privilege. If people are so intent on doing good then why not make food accessible to all instead of jumping on healthcare. This sounds like hypocrisy to me where the government promises better living standards while at the same time there are people dying on the streets because they don't have food to feed themselves and/or their family. So, here's my question. Why is food, something that's essential for survival, not free? Why is there no legislation in the House to be passed, a legislation that makes food free?
Too many people swear by the question "How much will this cost?". Some consideration should be given to the question "How much will this cost us if we dont do anything". Right now, the costs to us of this Health Care Distribution Problem is humongous. You can probably do the math youself, and get a reasonable estimate.
It has been this way her whole life. Bread is made of wheat. It doesn't have to be made of wheat, but in our culture, it is and always has been. Bread can be made of rice, but most people raised on wheat bread don't care for rice bread. It is not familiar, and they do not get what they expect. People die much younger if they do not have access to health care. The average lifespan in the U.S. is 20-30 years longer than the lifespan in Africa, right? There are other differences, but one of the main ones is access to health care. Your student does not see the have-nots. She does not realize that there are many. She also cannot conceive of losing everything because of medical bills. That's one that age and experience has to teach.
Today in class one of my students stated that its oK for biz to make $. She couldn't get the difference between selling a high dollar phone and selling a service that is essential to a person's health. Why is that concept so hard to grasp?
I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, the "nasty" far right radio shows and tv's talking heads continue to preach that Obama's "reign" is going to be the END of our country as we know it. They especially emphasize the trillions of dollars the American people will be paying for genrations to finance the "unsuccessful" bailouts and now the "healthcare bill for minorities". They totally ignore the FACTUAL news reporting a slow down and eventual turnaround of the unemployment numbers It is beyond my comprehension how seemingly intelligent and, for the most part, well-educated individuals can be completely misled and taken in by "celebrity" opinionated reporters and congressional members with their own agendasm who s-t-r-e-t-c-h the truth beyond recognition. Thank you for your straightforward reporting. Your comparisons and information are enlightening. I thoroughly enjoy reading the Chronicles everytime I receive them.
